Carol Donayre Bugg, ASID has been a longtime patron of Howard Avenue’s Antique Row since she owned a model home interior design business in the 70s and 80s. Carol says that back then she never dreamed that one day she would be opening up a Decorating Den Interiors Design Center just off of Howard Avenue at 10624 Fawcett Street in Kensington.
Decorating Den has been in business since 1969. It was Carol’s decorating experience and her husband Jim’s franchise expertise that drew them to purchasing the company 30 years ago. They were drawn to Dec Den’s concept of training and empowering women who have a passion for interior decorating to be all that they can be, and in turn having them assist homeowners in achieving the home of their dreams.
The idea behind DDI’s Design Center is to establish a place for franchise owners and decorators to work on client’s projects outside of their own home studios in the new Design Center where they will have access to a complete line of samples and catalogs from DDI’s extensive list of home furnishing suppliers. The other portion of the space will be devoted to showing the public the type of furniture, accessories, window treatments and other products that DDI interior decorators can make available to their clients. However, they will continue to service clients in the convenience of their homes where the decorator can work around existing furnishings and match fabrics in the proper lighting, two essentials to a successful project.
The Design Center is still a work in progress as Carol sets it up and interviews for a variety of positions including, Interior Decorators and Window Treatment Specialists, both experienced and trainee. Two members of Carol’s startup team are Lucy Church, a longtime local resident and DDI certified decorator, and Jim Kirlin who has returned to Decorating Den Interiors to work alongside his grandfather and Carol in developing DDI’s Design Studio prototype.
Carol’s idea is to have weekly “Events in The Den”…Fabric Trunk Shows, Makeover Power Points Programs, Trend Reports, and Career Seminars. She is planning a “Work in Progress” Pre-Opening Meet and Greet Event in The Den” for the local merchants on October 10th.. The next “Event In The Den” is scheduled for November 7th after Carol and Decorating Den’s Corporate Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing, return from the International High Point Home Furnishings Market with all of the latest trends! Carol is open to suggestions…please let her know what you would like to see at future Den Events.
